MRM Annual Report 2025

Introduction

The accounts are finalised and filed for Model Railway Magic Ltd’s company year from July 2024 to the end of June 2025. As in previous years, I think it’s worth sharing a few notes alongside the official reports to reflect on what we’ve been up to and how things are going.

I’ve kept similar headings as before for simplicity.

This period marks our third full year operating Train Trax and the first year of bringing The Model Tree Shop properly into the Model Railway Magic family. It’s been a year of growing into that bigger shape: serving more customers, looking after two established brands, and getting ready for our next big step – moving to new premises.

People

Customer satisfaction has remained high across both Train Trax and The Model Tree Shop, as shown by Trustpilot reviews, direct feedback and marketplace ratings. Packing quality, delivery speed and responsiveness continue to be the things customers mention most often, which is encouraging, as these are areas we work hard on. This ongoing focus on customer care sits neatly alongside our commitments under the Good Business Charter.

Bringing The Model Tree Shop into the business has been a big part of this year. I’m hugely grateful to Steve, who founded and built TMTS over many years. He has been generous with his time and knowledge throughout the transition – helping with product knowledge, supplier intros and all the practical detail that doesn’t show up on a balance sheet. That support has made it much easier to keep serving long-standing TMTS customers while we start to put our own stamp on the brand.

Our small team has continued to make a big difference:

  • Jonathan has remained a steady presence, looking after stock, packing and photography with his usual attention to detail. His work behind the scenes continues to improve how both sites look and function.
  • Keiren has developed his role across the second-hand and recycling side of the business, as well as handling Train Trax customer queries by phone and email. Many customers will have now met him in person at the shows we visit.

This year we kept to our intention of limiting show attendance to a manageable number, while still seeing the value of being “out in the wild”. Attending selected exhibitions has once again reminded me how helpful it is to put faces to names, answer questions in person and see the delight that a working layout can create across generations.

A personal note from this year: I was honoured to receive the University of York Enterprise Works “Inspirational Leader” award. Although it has my name on it, I see it very much as recognition of the work of the whole team and the wider community of customers, suppliers and supporters who have helped Model Railway Magic grow.

We also continued to benefit from local links with the Yorkshire Area Group of the N gauge society.

Profit

Turnover for the year increased again reflecting both the contribution from The Model Tree Shop and continued demand for Kato products through Train Trax. We didn’t quite meet our arbitary target of £500K. As you would expect with a bigger business, overheads also rose – especially stock, staffing and premises-related costs – but we are pleased that the company remained profitable overall.

As in previous years:

  • Corporation Tax on profits will be paid in the UK.
  • VAT payments to HMRC are fully up to date.
  • All supplier bills were paid on time.

These are basic disciplines, but they matter, and they sit alongside our renewed commitment to the Good Business Charter.

We have continued to pay down debt, while also investing in stock for The Model Tree Shop and in preparations for our upcoming move. This means that although profit margins have been under pressure at times, the business as a whole is on a stronger footing for the future.

Planet

We have continued to work towards the goals in our environmental policy across all parts of the business:

  • Ongoing contributions to Stripe Climate.
  • Extensive use of recycled and re-used packaging where practical.
  • Use of renewable energy for our web hosting.

With The Model Tree Shop now under the same umbrella, we’ve started to apply the same principles consistently across both brands.

Our model recycling programme – where Model Railway Magic began – has not received the attention it has deserved this year due to the other demands on our time. It still represents a relatively small percentage of overall turnover, but it remains an important part of our identity and our attempt to make the hobby a bit more circular.

Other notes

The year has been busy on several other fronts.

The Model Tree Shop integration
This has involved getting to grips with a very wide product range, learning from Steve’s experience, and gradually aligning systems and processes with the rest of the business. We’ve invested in additional stock, refreshed parts of the website and started to tell the TMTS story alongside that of Train Trax. There is still work to do, but early signs from customers have been positive.

Hex-TRAK
Hex-TRAK, launched in partnership with JSModels, has continued to gain traction. We’ve had interest and enquiries from outside the UK, and spent time during the year exploring how best to develop this modular system so that it remains accessible and fun while being robust enough for more serious layouts.

Premises and preparations for moving
A significant amount of energy this year has gone into planning our move to new premises. With both Train Trax and The Model Tree Shop growing, our existing space has been under increasing pressure.

During the year we:

  • Reviewed a number of possible sites and layouts.
  • Ran the numbers on rent, rates and fit-out costs.
  • Began detailed planning for racking, packing areas, show stock storage and a more welcoming space for visitors.

By the end of the financial year we were close to finalising plans, with the actual move taking place in the following period. We’ll report back on how it’s been next year!

Not every experiment this year delivered a financial return, but each has taught us something about what works for a small, values-driven business in a niche hobby.

Looking ahead

The next year will be shaped by three main priorities:

  • Successfully completing the move to new premises, minimising disruption for customers while setting ourselves up with a more efficient and pleasant working environment.
  • Continuing to develop The Model Tree Shop, enhancing the range where it makes sense, tidying systems and making it easier for customers to find what they need.
  • Growing Train Trax and Hex-TRAK steadily, keeping a close eye on stock levels, cash flow and marketing effectiveness.

We’ll keep looking for sensible opportunities to collaborate, whether that’s through new products, partnerships, exhibitions or the emerging visitor attraction idea. At the same time, we remain realistic about the constraints of our size and finances.

As before, we welcome enquiries about business opportunities and partnerships that build on our strengths in e-commerce, customer service and model railways.

Conclusion

I hope this summary gives a useful snapshot of the year from July 2024 to June 2025. It’s shared in the same spirit as previous reports: openness about what we’re doing, where things are going well, and where we’re still learning.

As sole shareholder and director, I still have the freedom to make my own mistakes and to embed my ethics and values into the business. I’m very aware that many customers, suppliers and other stakeholders have an interest in our success too, and I’m grateful for the trust and support you’ve shown during another year of change and growth.

MRM Annual Report 2024

The accounts are finalized for Model Railway Magic Ltd’s company year from July 2023 to the end of June 2024. As with last year, I think it’s worth sharing a few notes alongside the official reports to reflect on the year.

I’ve kept similar headings as last year for simplicity.

This period marks our second full year operating Train Trax alongside Model Railway Magic’s second-hand business. It’s been a year of consolidating our strengths while also experimenting with new ideas and approaches.

People

I’m happy to report that customer satisfaction remains high, as reflected in our Trustpilot scores and eBay feedback. From this, we know that aspects like packaging, speed, and responsiveness matter to our customers, and they continue to tell us that we’re hitting the mark. This commitment to customer satisfaction aligns with our values under the Good Business Charter.

To maintain this high level of service during our busy holiday season, we hired Peter as a temporary assistant. It was fantastic to have an outside perspective from someone new to the modeling hobby, and his contribution was invaluable before he moved on to new ventures.

Toward the end of the financial year, we brought Keiren on board as a part-time team member. He’s focused on our second-hand business and also handles Train Trax customer queries by phone and email. His enthusiasm for all things on wheels, particularly his knowledge of Japanese railways, is infectious!

We’re also very pleased that Jonathan has remained with us throughout the year.

This year, we attended TINGS 2023, The Manchester Show, the York Easter Show, Model World Live at the NEC, and the NGS WWG convention (also in York). Although it was more shows than we’d initially planned, these opportunities allowed us to connect directly with customers, which was fantastic.

We also invested time in two valuable programs for the business. First, a government-funded innovation program led to some behind-the-scenes improvements in our technology and processes, as well as connections with other local businesses. Second, an accelerator program helped us refine our ‘Core Stories.’ Nico’s guidance through this process has been immensely beneficial, and you may have noticed some of the resulting material in our emails and social media posts.

Profit

Turnover for the year saw a significant increase, totaling around £415k. While overheads also rose, our profit before tax doubled as a percentage of turnover. We attribute this growth largely to an increase in online advertising spend, supported by a specialist agency.

The increased profit allowed us to pay down some debt and build a small reserve for the future. Corporation tax on profit will be paid in the UK, and VAT payments to HMRC are fully up-to-date. We paid all supplier bills on time, aligning with our commitment to the Good Business Charter, which we renewed this year.

Planet

We continued to meet the goals of our environmental policy across all areas. We’re still contributing to Stripe Climate, using recycled packaging, and relying on renewable energy for our web hosting. The model recycling program, where Model Railway Magic began, has grown thanks to Keiren’s role. Revenue from this part of the business has doubled, though it still represents a small part of the bigger picture.

Other Notes

Train Trax has been selling through its website and eBay for some time, and we experimented with expanding to Amazon Marketplace to reach more customers. After a trial period, we found that the extra fees and complications didn’t justify the returns, so we closed our Amazon storefront just before Christmas.

We also explored acquiring another business that would have complemented our offerings, but the seller withdrew at a late stage, despite our investment in travel and legal fees. We’ve learned valuable lessons for future opportunities.

Not all the shows we attended turned out to be commercially successful, which is why we’re likely to limit our presence to three shows per year. However, we do recognize the value of brand visibility beyond immediate sales.

Looking Ahead

Since the company’s end of year, we’ve taken over The Model Tree Shop, and we’re excited to bring it alongside our existing offerings. Developing this brand will be a focus over the next year, so profits may be limited in the short term due to this investment.

Additionally, we recently launched Hex-TRAK in partnership with JSModels. This venture has incredible potential, and we’re now engaged in international discussions about its future.

We’re always considering “what’s next,” though we’re mindful of the constraints of our size and finances. As stated last year, we welcome inquiries about business opportunities and partnerships.

Conclusion

I hope this summary of our business year is useful. It’s shared in the spirit of openness about what we’re up to and how we’re progressing. As the sole shareholder and director, I have the freedom to make my own mistakes and embed my ethics and values into the business. I also recognize that many customers and stakeholders share an interest in our success.

MRM Annual Report 2023

Introduction

Very soon my accountants will publish the annual ‘returns’ for Model Railway Magic to all the places which they need to go. In a spirit of openness about what we’re upto and how we’re doing, I’d like to share a few notes about our work. As sole shareholder and director, I’m fairly free to make my own mistakes, and impose my own ethics and values on the business. As such I don’t think it’s adequate to simply report on finance, important though it is.

You may have heard of ‘Triple Bottom Line’ reporting, which sounds very complicated, but as I understand it there is simply a recognition that it’s useful to talk about Profit, People and Planet when reporting successes and failures. Without being at all formal I’ll use those headings for these notes.

This period (July 2022 – June 2023) is the first full company year of owning and operating Train Trax. Over this period I personally continued to learn about the industry as well as lots about Japanese and North American trains!

Profit

The business finances for this period are as published by the accountants. The company turnover was just over £300k. Margins in this industry are quite low, especially as Train Trax discounts from the RRP. However, despite spending to set up new premises and equipping for shows, there was a modest profit at the end of the year. Corporation tax will be paid on this in the UK, and VAT has been fully paid up to HMRC. All bills to suppliers were paid on time. These last two points are part of our commitment to the Good Business charter. Debt (no interest payable) has been reduced slightly.

People

Customer satisfaction remains high as reported in Trustpilot scores and eBay feedback. Things like packaging, speed and responsiveness seem important to customers and they say we’re getting things right. Our commitment to customers is another tenet of the Good Business Charter.

It’s been fantastic to meet customers in person at shows and events over the year. Putting a human face to a name on a parcel is very satisfying to me. I’ve also noticed the impact of our products on customers which fall into four themes:

  • Customers are generally the best advocates for Kato products. I’ve been told by them time and time again how much less frustrating Unitrack is than the competitors, and how reliable the rolling stock can be. For some, changing to Kato prevented them from giving up on the hobby altogether.
  • There are several regular customers who have sole caring commitments for loved ones. Modelling (and buying online) provides a vital outlet for them to do something for themselves, without being away from home. Having a hobby was important for pandemic mental health, but it’s impact on all our wellbeing continues.
  • For those who are able to get out and meet each other, it’s been great to hear from what various N gauge groups are doing across the country. I’m very happy to have supported several with discounts and free advice.
  • At shows, I’ve seen the smiles from children, parents and grandparents that a simple train on a shuttle can create. It’s important to remember that little trains make people happy.

I can’t talk about people without mentioning our first employee, Jonathan who came into the business part-time towards the end of this period. He has brought with him key knowledge of the modelling industry from his own business JSmodels. He’s also a methodical hard worker with an eye for detail. If a parcel is immaculately packed, it will be one of his. His new photos have also helped transform the website.

This would also be a good place to thank all those other people who have helped me in other ways over the year. You know who you are so I won’t embarrass you by naming everyone!

Planet

We’ve met all of the aims of our environmental policy to some extent in every respect. We have continued to make contributions to ‘Stripe climate‘, used recycled packaging and use renewable energy across all our web hosting.

The model recycling programme (where Model Railway Magic started) represented only two percent of turnover for this period. This was caused by being short of time, and we hope to improve on this in the future.

Other items worthy of mention

As mentioned above, In February 2023 the company moved operating premises from a small office to an industrial unit on the same site. The move was time consuming and various costs were incurred, although the new unit was equipped mostly with recycled furniture and equipment. The extra space has made operations much easier and allowed us to hold more volume of stock, so was a good move.

We have established a good relationship with KATO in Japan, although we maintain our links with distributors across three continents to ensure the best possible supply.

We have continued to invest in improvements to our websites and other technology associated with our operations. As an online business we are aware that we need to keep changing to stay competitive, and will actively investigate new platforms and marketplaces.

Although we are an online business, we have explored selected Model Railway Exhibitions as a way to get the Train Trax brand mode widely known and meet our customers. As noted above, these have been fun and effective. We plan on restricting these to three or four each year to keep the impact manageable.

Future

Kato products remain popular and our online marketing strategy appears to be working well. With this in mind Train Trax sales are expected to grow modestly over the next reporting period; the challenge will be to keep costs such as postage and website hosting under control while continuing to satisfy our customers.

Operating Train Trax remains as the most significant activity for Model Railway Magic, and it is likely to remain so for the near future. However, we are investigating other activities and brands to establish whether they can sensibly be operated alongside the existing business and become part of the Model Railway Magic family. Enquiries about business opportunities, especially those which build on our strength in e-commerce, are always welcome.

Conclusion

I hope this has provided a snapshot of the last year for the company that goes beyond a balance sheet. This is of course only a summary and by necessity must skim over much detail. This doesn’t mean detail isn’t important for the company!

Your comments and questions regarding this document are welcome, and may help shape the equivalent notes for next year.
